Hidden Makan Place :: Shunfu Market
November 6th, 2006 by Daren Tay
Recently, via www.sbestfood.com, I came across a place in Shunfu market for good chee chong fun. The stall name is Mei Zhen Hakka Delicacies. So on Friday 27th, we decided to head over there for breakfast.

The stall is tugged nicely at the back of the market but upon entering the market, one can see a considerable number of people eating stuff from their stall. Naturally, we head over with earnest to taste their cooking. They sell an assortment of flour stuff. Things like Abacus seed (算盘å), Yam Cake (芋头糕), chee chong fang (çŒªè‚ ç²‰), Yam Porridge (芋头粥) -interesting huh- and some other stuff. Check out this page :: http://www.sbestfood.com/meizhenhakkadelicacies.htm We ordered Yam Cake, some kind of guei, which I forget the name – I think yunzhen can fill in on this (Yunzhen: I'm afraid I've forgotten the name too) -. Teh si for her, Teh si peng for him. And my fatherly love breakfast, which my Dad must have thought I have work today, as with every other day.

There was no more chee chong fun (next time!) but nevertheless, the other stuff are just as good. Perhaps if we come earlier in the morning it would be better and fresher but still, it was good to the stomach. The sauce and chilli was good. I think venue gets a 3 star for me as the place is pretty quiet and the food is decent. So, my take: Venue :: 3 Stars Taste :: 3 Stars We then went to queue up at another stall (Singaporeans' favourite past time), which was selling freshly made muffins. Smell nice too. We bought Chocolate Chip, Walnut, Banana, Pumpkin, Blueberry. There were many other varieties too. Priced between $1 – $1.20, its quite a worth buy
Come to think of it, I think Huishan told me about this just recently…

Ok over to Yunzhen for her comments.
YunZhen's ratings::
Mei Zhen Hakka Delicacies: 3 1/2 STARS (saving the 4th Star for the chee cheong fan we missed)
Chocolat N Spice : 4 STARS (Muffins are fresh & moist. Yummy!!!)
Early bird catches the worms. To be in time before the popular chee cheong fun is sold out, be sure to reach Shunfu market before 10am. Although we were a little dissapointed about missing the chee cheong fan, the yam kuei was good nevertheless.
After satisfying our quest of salty food, we were attracted to the long queue for muffins at Chocolat N Spice. Some sweet taste to mark the closure of our holiday morning. The queue was long but the waiting time was short & definitely worth it. Chocolat N Spice has another outlet beside Tanjong Pagar Market (opposite Amara Hotel). I tasted my very first Choc N Spice muffin there. It was yummy and I thought the muffins sold at the Tanjong Pagar outlet were larger and the chocolate muffins were laced with chocolate rice instead of chocolate drops. Try it & be your own judges.
Daren, I'm craving for chocolate muffins!!! *Hint hint* =)
